Why We Exist

Kerala Independent Farmers Association (KIFA) is the last ray of hope for the oppressed and marginalized farmers of Kerala. It’s committed to the urgent need of revival of agriculture in Kerala and also to stop all farmer oppressions through collective action and empowerment, thereby ensuring farmers survival and realization of their dreams. KIFA is an organization for the farmers, by the farmers.

KIFA is determined to interfere on behalf of the exploited and marginalized farming community of Kerala and utilize all lawful routes to find solutions to their problems. This includes creating awareness among farmers about their rights, mass petitions, agitation, governmental intermediary initiatives, legal action, educating people’s representatives etc.

Within the short span of one year (It got started on 5th June, 2020), KIFA has emerged as the voice of the despondent farmers of Kerala. It’s actively engaged in the fields of wildlife attacks on human life and property, atrocities of forest officials, the imposing of illegal and unjustified restrictions on their farming activities on the pretext of enforcing Ecologically Sensitive Zone (ESZ), Ecologically Fragile Land (EFL), Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) etc.

KIFA also questions imposing restrictions on farmers with regard to the planting and cutting trees in their farm lands. It’s beyond doubt scientific silviculture offers great opportunity for farmers to boost their otherwise sagging farm incomes.

Farmers have the right to self-defence against marauding wild animals. All farmers should be granted indemnity against any consequences in dealing with wild life attacks on their property and/or lives. KIFA invokes the right to life and livelihood guaranteed by Indian constitution under article 21 in this regard.

In short, KIFA wants forest laws to be applied in forest lands only and not in the revenue lands of farmers. Moreover, KIFA would challenge and fight the forest department’s continued attempts to re-classify patta lands as forests proclaiming reasons only they are liable to respect.
Its objectives are listed in the, ’Avakasha Patrika’ or ‘Declaration of Rights’ in a more detailed and categorical manner.
